Accomodation and attractions in Giżycko

In the very heart of the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes, just off the huge Niegocin, there is Giżycko - the merriest, being the sailing and summer capital of Poland. It is at its thresholds that all who enjoy themselves at the highest level of entertainment, and in the water, which exceptionally well located in the Giżycko area, make them one of the largest and most popular Polish inland ports. It is also here that tourists who love their Masurian accommodation go down. Giżycko greets everyone warmly.

The official beginnings of Giżycko, which owes its name to the Masurian folklorist, writer and social and national activist Gustaw Gizewiusz from the Germanized Giżycki family, which was given on March 4, 1946, date back to the first half of the XIV century and the construction of a castle by the Teutonic Order around which the Lötzen settlement quickly began to form. The castle from the very beginning of its existence was a strategic point for those who currently enforced power in it, which is why the city can boast of an exceptional number of places worth visiting. Among other things, they belonged to the Teutonic castle, which now houses the exclusive St. Bruno, Boyen Fortress built in 1844-1856 in the shape of a star, and erected in 1920, measuring 25 meters of the Tower of Water, also known as the Water Tower. Being in Giżycko, you have to visit the classicist Evangelical-Augsburg Church in which for several decades in July and August the International Festival of Organ and Chamber Music takes place, the oldest Catholic church, which is the Sanctuary of Saint. Brunona or Wzgórza of St. Brunon, on which since 1910 stands a cast-iron cross commemorating the place of martyr's death, which since 1999 was the patron of the city of the bishop.

Monuments are an important part of the city, but what contributed to the ever-growing popularity of Giżycko is water. It is connected with the majority of tourist attractions which include the nearby lakes which can be followed by a fascinating, sometimes many-hour cruise, Łuczański channels with the only drawbridge in Poland, Niegociński and Piękna Góra, which contributed to the creation of Giżycko Island or the famous, mid-July Festival of Sailing and Maritime Songs. After all, the Polish sailing song should be heard where the most sailors stay, and those who have always been drawn to water parties. Giżycko Cultural Center organizes regular events taking place in the city. The most famous are the Szanty Sailing and Maritime Song Festival in Giżycko. At the end of May, events related to the celebration of Giżycko Days are organized, and in the summer organ concerts take place in the Evangelical Church. The Center of Culture organizes classes for young people in dance, music, theater, art and photography sections. Elders invites you to the chess section, the choir and the Senior Club. The Center of Culture is also responsible for organizing the Review of Dancing Bands and poetry evenings. What's more, every year, on the first weekend of August, in the amphitheater of the Boyen Fortress, the oldest Polish hip-hop festival takes place: Mazury Hip-Hop Festival.

Giżycko is characterized by a large number of green areas. Forest areas occupy 7% of the city's area, while greenery areas are occupied by 1.5% of the total area of ​​the city (6.8 m² / 1 inhabitant). In the vicinity of Giżycko there is also the City Forest, which is an attractive resting place characterized by high biodiversity.
