Accommodation in Morąg

Despite its small size (inhabited by about 14-thousand people) Morag hides many interesting monuments - testimonies of the city's former importance. Around 1280, the Teutonic Knights built their stronghold here, at which the settlement began to appear. In the fourteenth century, a castle was erected - the prosecutor's office, church, defensive walls and city gates. Around 1327, the settlement received city rights. The second room in Toruń did not change the city's affiliation - it remained in the Teutonic state, and from 1525 in Prussia.

Particularly noteworthy is the branch of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury located in the former palace of the distinguished Dohn family. It was one of many properties of this family in Prussia - they were its owners over 400 years. Today, it houses a rich collection of XVI-XVIII-century painting, including an impressive collection of Dutch portraits. In the palace, we will also learn about the life and work of the philosopher Enlightenment born in Morąg - Johann Gotfried Herder. In the center, the medieval town hall with the cannons from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 is visible. It is worth visiting the richly equipped Gothic church of Saints Peter and Paul. In the three-nave church, in addition to the beautiful crystal vaults in the aisles, we can see a Baroque main altar, epitaphs and gravestones, an organ prospectus. One should look into the Teutonic castle, from which one wing and foundations of the remaining ones along with the moat have been preserved. The present owner of the stronghold took care of the remains of the building - he offers a castle area for outdoor meetings, etc. You can even stay in a castle room - if someone has strong nerves and does not mind the spirit of the alleged infanticide condemned to torture and beheading or the spirit of Grand Master Henry who died in Morag Reuss von Plauen. Walking along the streets we can easily distinguish the oldest part of the city - a part of the defensive walls and fragments of the former buildings have survived.
