Description

VASA OBELISK – an baroque obelisk, the oldest historic monument in Wyszkow, one of the oldest secular monuments in Mazovia.

It was erected after 1655 according to the project of Jan Baptysta Gisleni, court architect of Vasa dynasty in Poland. It was founded by king Jan II Kazimierz in his brothers’s memory Karol Ferdynand Vasa bishop of Plock, who spent in Wyszkow last years of his life. It is made of local red and brown marble. On the plinth from four sides there are bas-reliefs of Vasa dynasty emblems – sheaf with a crown. The obelisk is crowned with a ball with a double crossed cross, which was put on it probably later.

According to one of the hypothesis the obelisk was founded to commemorate a meeting of the two kings in Wyszkow. According to other tale it was erected to commemorate a plaque, which was in the town in the 17th century. A crown with triple cross may be the evidence of that.

Identical obelisk was situated to the east of Wyszkow at the road to Ostrow. It was damaged in the first half of the 19th century. Some elements of it are in the closest neighborhood of St. Giles Church.

The object was renovated in 1993.
