Description

The Sanctuary in Stoczek Klasztorne is one of the most famous pilgrimage places in Warmia.

The temple in Stoczek Klasztornym was built in the seventeenth century in a difficult period for Poland with the Swedes. The defeat of the war touched the whole country, but the region that suffered particularly from the enemy was Warmia.

It is not surprising then that the appeal of King Władysław IV to propitiate Divine Providence was answered by the Bishop of Warmia, Mikołaj Szyszkowski. He pledged to fund the temple in honor of Our Lady, Queen of Peace. When the ceasefire took place, Bishop Szyszkowski built a beautiful baroque rotunda-shaped church for the divine help.

A copy of the painting of the Mother of God Salus Populi Romani (Salvation of the Roman People) coming from Rome from the Basilica of St. Mary Major was brought here. The painting was placed in the main altar, whose author is Krzysztof Peucker - the same artist who made the altar in Święta Lipka.

The shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was looked after by the Bernardines. At the beginning of the 18th century, a presbytery was added to the church and surrounded by cloisters. The vaults of the cloisters are decorated with scenes from the Old Testament by the famous Maciej Meyer. Attention is also paid to the stations of the Way of the Cross in the form of bas-reliefs made by Krzysztof Perwanger.

A special ornament of the temple is the pulpit made of iron, the work of Herman Ketenbringka from Dobre Miasto and the iron-casted balustrade from 1756. In the 1950s, Stefan Wyszyński was imprisoned in Stoczek Klasztorny Primate of the Millennium. The cell in which Wyszynski was detained can be visited.

The monastery also has a unique baroque garden - one of the most beautiful of its kind in Poland. The priests of Marian Fathers, who look after the sanctuary today, received in 2001 from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage a silver medal "for the best greenery that accompanies historic buildings".
