Description

Museum founded by a well-known regionalist, director of the district hospital in Tomaszów Lubelski dr. Janusz Peter.

The official opening of the facility took place on October 7, 1962. The first headquarters of the Museum was a district hospital. The collection numbered about 1,700 exhibits and was the property of the founder. In 1967, the collection was nationalized, and the institution became a poviat cultural institution.

In 1975, the Museum was moved to the building of the former Powiat District. In this year, due to administrative changes in the country, the institution was subordinated to the District Museum in Zamość and until 1999 it functioned as a branch of the then created museum structure of the Zamość Province. In the meantime, in 1984, the Museum was moved to the newly built Dom Kombatanta, where it received premises with an area of 830 m².

Since 1999, the museum functions as an independent institution, whose governing body is Powiat Tomaszowski. From the very beginning, the institution was a multi-faceted museum and collected monuments related to the history of the city and the Tomaszów region, as well as documents, prints and photographs concerning the history of the city and the region. The museum conducts research on the past of Tomaszów. He deals with the collection, scientific development and access to collections. Currently, it has around 15,000 exhibits in the following departments: Archeology, History, Numismatics, Ethnography and Art.
