Description

The only museum in Poland that is entirely devoted to the history of architecture and contemporary architecture is the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław.

The Museum was established in 1965, initially as a branch of the Museum of the City of Wrocław, and was then known as the Museum of Architecture and Reconstruction.

The founder of the museum was the main conservator of Wroclaw's monuments and later professor of the Wrocław University of Technology, Olgierd Czerner, who managed the institution from its founding until the year 2000. Initially, the aim of the museum was first of all to acquire and inventory the remaining remnants of architectural details from buildings ruined during the war. The most valuable of them have been gathered on a permanent, increased over time, exposition in the Romanesque Hall.

The museum is located in the historic complex of the former Bernardine monastery, erected in the second half of the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. The monastery complex was severely damaged during World War II and remained in partial ruin for almost two decades. The rebuilding of the monastery buildings, run from 1960 according to the designs of architect Edmund Małachowicz, finally ended in 1974 with putting into use the former St. Bernardine from Siena. Today, it houses the main exhibition hall of the museum. With time, the museum has expanded its interest to the whole of Poland, devoting more attention to contemporary architecture. Collections regarding modernist architecture from the inter-war period were also begun.

In 1971, the museum became independent and was renamed the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław. As one of the first institutions of this type in the world, it became the founder of the International Confederation of Architecture Museums (ICAM), which today has more than one hundred institutions operating on almost all continents, and in which the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw still actively participates.

In 2000, the post of the director was taken by Dr. Jerzy Ilkosz. At that time, the museum took over the collections of the former Building Archive of the City of Wrocław, covering over 150,000 designs of Wrocław buildings, created from the beginning of the 19th century to 1945. Among them were projects of Hans Poelzig, Erich Mendelsohn, Max Berg, Ernst May and Hans Scharoun, and many other prominent architects. At present, thanks to the use of European Union funds, almost 50,000 archival projects have been digitized, which are made available on the website of the Construction Archives collection.

The Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw is the only museum institution in Poland entirely dedicated to the history of architecture and contemporary architecture. Since its inception, it has organized over 600 temporary exhibitions, presented in Wroclaw and in Poland and abroad. It implements programs and events addressed to architects, historians and the wider public. He prepares exhibitions, publications and cooperates with city authorities in the protection and revitalization of the architectural heritage of the city. He also presents designs for applied art as well as paintings and graphics. As an institution with the largest exhibition space in Wroclaw, the museum hosts exhibitions and events prepared in cooperation

with cultural institutions from around the world.
