Description

The District Museum in Toruń is the oldest and largest cultural institution in the city.

Established in 1861, currently has six branches - the House of Nicolaus Copernicus, the Museum of History of Toruń (at the Esken House), the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread, Travelers' Museum. Tony Halik, the Museum of Far East Art (in Kamienica pod Gwiazdą) and the Old Town Hall which is a Gothic symbol of the city.

The museum has a very rich cultural offer - the rarest exhibits from far Asia, masterpieces of Polish painting by such artists as Julian Falat, Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Chełmoński, Andrzej Wróblewski, Zdzisław Beksiński and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, unique souvenirs await visitors in individual departments. from the exotic journeys of Tony Halik and Elżbieta Dzikowska, the legendary copernican, unique archaeological findings and, finally, Toruń's gingerbread forms and everything related to the baking of gingerbread.

Throughout the year, also during holidays and winter holidays, the Museum organizes various activities for children and teenagers - from painting, sculptural and art workshops through educational activities, museum lessons on educational games. All these proposals were divided on the basis of the age of the recipient: for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools as well as for people with intellectual disabilities. Some of the branches - the Museum of History of Toruń, the Museum of Far East Art and the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread have specially adapted for children and young people, interactive educational rooms.

Recently, the Museum's offer also includes guided tours (after the Tony Halik Traveler Museum, the Old Town Hall and the Museum of Far East Art), which presents the subjects of the given branch in an accessible way.

A particularly friendly place for children is the Museum of Toruń's Gingerbread - an interactive changing room, a games and play area, old animated films and, above all, baking workshops for gingerbread, which makes it very popular among school trips.

All Museum branches are located in the Old Town. For this reason, they do not have car parks, however, it is possible to leave the vehicle within the old town. With the exception of the Kamienica pod Gwiazdą there are facilities for the disabled everywhere - lifts, driveways and specially adapted toilets. All branches are open from Tuesday to Sunday, from October to April from 10:00 to 16:00, and in the summer season from May to September from 10:00 to 18:00.
