Accommodation in Mikołajki

One of the most beautifully located towns in Poland - Mikołajki. The town is surrounded by large water reservoirs, which makes the region a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, especially sailing. The city owes its name to Saint. Nicholas and is located between two large lakes - Tatły and Mikolajki. A little further, at the north-eastern horns, there is Łuknajno, among others majestic: Śniardwy, Warnołty, Bełdany, Głębokie and Tałtowisko. Mikołajki is commonly called the "Masurian Venice" and for many they are also the sailing capital of Poland. When the sailing season is full, all water sports enthusiasts come to the city, which means that from a small aquatic town, Mikołajki are growing several times in terms of population.

However, Mikołajki is not only abut water and water sports, it is also about unique nature which is a huge asset of the nearby Mazury Landscape Park. The main task of the Park is to protect the extraordinary landscape of the Great Masurian Lakes and their unique fauna and flora. This is a very ambitious goal, because water reservoirs, including about 60 lakes and one of the most interesting kayak routes in Europe, the Krutyń River, constitute almost 1/3 of the Park's area, and its inhabitants are to a large extent species under strict protection. There are 10 protected reserves in the Masurian Landscape Park. The best known is the Nature Reserve of Łuknajno Lake near Mikołajki. This is an exceptional place, largely due to the presence of mute swans and over 170 species of various birds, which enchanted by huge water surfaces have created a unique ornithological habitat on its site. A visit to the Łuknajno Lake Nature Reserve is a great escape from the chaos of everyday life, so it is worth having it during your stay in Masuria Venice.

There are many monuments in the area of ​​Mikolajki that remind us of the turbulent history of Masurian lands. One of them is the neoclassical Evangelical-Augsburg Church of the Holy Trinity built in 1841-1842 by Karol Fryderyk Schinkel, whose many works can be admired in contemporary Berlin. Near the church is founded by priest. Władysław Pilcha-Pilchowski, the first and one of the two Polish Museum of the Reformation in Poland. The collections of the institution contain unique collections of historical monuments and Polish printing in Masuria until 1945. These are not only antique books, but also photographs, parish books, plaques with the names of city residents or the Polish Bible written in Polish in 1726. Another worth visiting the temple St. Nicholas Church is a neo-gothic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The building was erected in 1910 and since then it has fulfilled various functions, from the evangelical church, to the fire station or the stable, to eventually become a Roman Catholic parish. In 1991, in memory of the fourth pilgrimage of John Paul II to the country, a church was built on which two bells were hanged: Ave Maria and John Paul II.

Sight-seeing enthusiasts must visit the Regional Observatory of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management and enter the tower of St. Nicholas from which stretches a breathtaking view of the amazing panorama of the city. The obligatory point in their journey is paying homage to King Sielaw, who can be found in two forms in the city. One of them is a wooden, three-meter sculpture of a fish in the crown, which from the turn of June and July until late autumn is tied to the pillar of a road bridge on Lake Mikołajskie, the second fountain located in Wolności Square, one of the most recognizable symbols of Mikołajki. Winning the favor of the monarch not only to improve fate, but also contribute to a quick return to charming, unique and hospitable Santa Claus sites.

Łuknajno - the kingdom of the mute swan

Łuknajno Lake near Mikołajki is one of the most important bird refuge in Europe. In 1947, an ornithological nature reserve was established here. In later years Łuknajno Lake was also covered by international protection, entering it into the so-called Ramsar list, protecting muddy and wet areas. A biosphere reserve was established here as part of the UNESCO program "human and biosphere". This shallow, overgrown and hard-to-reach lake is one of the largest colonies of silent swans in Europe, numbering up to 2,000 individuals. Of course, apart from the mute swans, we will also see many other species of birds here - cranes, geese, white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers, grebes and others. At the lake shore there are three lookout towers, from which we can look at birds. Take your binoculars with you. A special buzz and movement on the lake prevails during the spring arrivals and autumn departures, then the lake makes the most impression. From the lookout tower located in the Łuknajno farm, we can also see Śniardwy, with which Lake Łuknajno is connected by a watercourse.

 

Krutynia River

Krutynia is a river legend, the most beautiful canoe trail in Masuria. The trail is over 100 km long and runs through Piska Forest, Masurian Landscape Park, beautiful Masurian lakes. Krutynia was swimming, including Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II. Canoeing can be started already in Sorkwity on Lake Lampackie. In 2009, the kayaking trail of the Krutynia River was awarded with the Certificate of the Polish Tourist Organization for the Tourist Product of the Year 2009. In the Mazury village of Krutyń, located in the heart of the Piska Forest, you can go rafting Krutynia with special puff-boats, controlled by rafters. This kind of rafting has its long tradition dating back to the interwar period.

 

Popielno

Popielno in the Piska Forest is the only place in Europe where Polish ponies live in freedom. Polish horses are a breed of horse derived directly from the wild tarpans, which formerly inhabited areas of Central Europe. The first ponies came to Popielno in 1949. Currently, the area of ​​the reserve is 1,600 ha and includes a peninsula between four lakes - Bełdanami, Mikołajskie, Śniardwy and Warnołtami. In addition to horses that live in the wild, the Polish Academy of Sciences runs a stable breeding of these animals in Popielno. Beavers, deer and cattle of the Polish Red breed are also bred here. Located in the center of the Piska Forest and surrounded by lakes, Popielno is a beautiful place. The conditions prevailing here favors animals that actually feel at home here. Not infrequently wild horses can be found along the road leading to Popielno. In Popielno, there is also a natural museum with an interesting collection of precious deer antlers and antique horse-drawn carts and sleighs.

 

Wierzba

The passenger-car ferry connecting the village of Wierzba with the west bank of the Bełdany Lake is the only such crossing in Masuria. It allows faster access from Popielno to Mikołajki, Kamien and Iznoty. Crossing on a length of about 400 m grass a dozen or so minutes. The ferry is open from June to the end of September.
