Holy Mountain in Gdynia
81-001 Gdynia
Description
It is a small forest hill, the official name is Mount St. Nicholas.
Already during the pagan period it was of great importance for the then religious cult. During the excavations, various objects were found pointing to the place of burial. The souvenirs come from the period of the Lusatian era, that is, around 1300 - 400 BC, they are mainly small everyday objects, clasps, cabbons etc. trifles.
In Christian times, this place was famous for the numerous apparitions of Saint. Nicholas. Already in 1770, the then Gdynia village administrator built the first chapel here, in which he placed the statue of Saint. Nicholas. Every December 6, there were indulgences with numerous arriving pilgrims, even from very distant places. Nicholas was considered a saint who gives help in every need. In particular, he took care of sailors, bakers, children, the poor, townsmen and maids on the issue.
In 1938, during the construction of Morska Street, a real treasure was found at the foot of Mount. Found a clay pot with many coins (there were over 1,400 of them) with medallions and crosses. The most interesting find was the medal of Saint. Benedict, so-called Dread demon, who was supposed to protect against evil spirits and witches. Why was he here in this place? To answer this question, a short walk around the neighborhood is enough, especially at dusk ...
Święta Góra also has its modern history, about 20 years ago, the residents of Chyloni restored their former religious character here. Two chapels were built with figures of St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary, numerous benches have been erected, paths have been marked out. There is a Way of the Cross placed on the trees to the chapels. Prayers are held here, also in Kashub.
On the chapel of St. Nicholas has the inscription: "When the cult of the Holy Mountain returns, the city will convert." It is not known who and when placed this inscription. This is another mystery surrounding the lost hill in the forest.
Święta Góra surrounded by forest but also legends, attracts here with its unique atmosphere, calmness, the possibility of reverie, but also beautiful views.
