Description
It is located in Wasilków, but from the center of Białystok, the capital of the region, it is a few minutes by car. The opportunity to spend time among greenery and antique wooden architecture makes people like to come here.
In the museum, up to now, over forty monuments have been collected. Apart from examples of small architecture, such as old chapels and roadside crosses, there are also historic windmills, cottages, barns, or a larch manor house from the Great Beaver.
The manor is one of the oldest and by far the most magnificent of all the monuments of the Podlasie Museum of Folk Culture. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century. In times of splendor, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the salon of the then owners was reportedly visited by the writer Eliza Orzeszkowa or the painter Jan Stanisławski. In the interwar period, an outstanding photographer, Jan Bułhak, was here.
In Podlasie Museum of Folk Culture, you can watch over a dozen permanent exhibitions. They show the life of the former residents of Bialystok in many, sometimes surprising scenes. Such an atypical attraction is the forestal moonshine. Its equipment was handed over to the museum by policemen who took over the equipment for the production of alcohol from people involved in this illegal practice.
Another attraction, which is not to be found in other museums, is the Sokolarnia Ecological Education Center. It was created to spread knowledge about winged predators and help protect them.
Among exhibitions in the open-air museum, in the interiors of rural cottages and barns, of course, ethnographic ones dominate. In cottages from Tymianek and Stara Grzybowszczyzna, visitors will see equipment and everyday objects used by grandparents and great-grandparents of today's inhabitants of Podlasie, in a nearby barn - an exhibition about old means of transport. There are exhibitions devoted to beekeeping, woodcarving, or pottery.
Several times a year museum employees organize large outdoor events: "Zapusty w Skananse", "Zielone Świątki w Skananse", "Smaki Podlasia" and "Podlasie Ziołami Pachnące". Each of the festivals has its own unique character. All of them refer to the folk tradition of the region connected with the celebrations that accompanied Christmas celebrations or - like "Tastes of Podlasie" - with our culinary heritage.
