Dawniej handlowano tutaj towarami, jeszcze w okresie międzywojennym, to właśnie tutaj w dni targowe, rynek zapełniał się handlującymi osobami, organizowano turnieje i parady, ogłaszano wyroki, a nawet wykonywano publiczne egzekucje.

Centralne miejsce na rynku zajmuje monumentalny Ratusz. Uwagę przykuwa także neorenesansowy Dwór Artusa - miejsce licznych koncertów i wystaw oraz barokowa Kamienica Pod Gwiazdą - obecnie Muzeum Sztuki Dalekiego Wschodu. Zachodnią pierzeję rynku zamykają kościół Ducha Św. i neogotycki gmach poczty. Ponad 150 lat temu na staromiejskim rynku stanął pomnik słynnego toruńczyka - Mikołaja Kopernika; swoje miejsce znalazł tutaj również posąg grającego na skrzypcach flisaka, nawiązujący do starej toruńskiej legendy.

Dzisiaj, tak jak przed wiekami rynek stanowi centralne miejsce spotkań, to właśnie tutaj z reguły zaczyna się zwiedzanie Torunia, to również tutaj mieszkańcy miasta umawiają się na spotkania, z reguły w pobliżu pomnika Mikołaja Kopernika.

Toruń is the undisputed leader in terms of tourism in the region. Every year, the city is visited by over 2 million tourists who stay in hotels and guesthouses in Toruń. In this city there is the largest number of accommodation facilities among all cities in the province. 40 objects operate here, including 23 hotels. There is also the largest number of 4-star hotels (5 facilities) and 3-star hotels (9 together with Ciechocinek).
