Description
At present, it is the place where a reconstructed, medieval settlement from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries is founded. The rock birch forest of Birowa, as well as the caves at its foot, were the perfect defensive point and shelter for our nomadic primeval animals inhabiting this land almost 30,000 years ago. Along with the development of agriculture in the next millennia, Birów has become the place of many cultures: the culture of funnel bowls, string pottery and the Lusatian culture. Traces of the stay of Germanic tribes, probably Vandals, were discovered here, as well as the invasion and conquest of the castle by the Eastern Scythian tribe. The last settlers in Birów were the Slavs, who built here a settlement that existed on the top of the mountain from about the eighth to the mid-14th century.
In the first centuries of the existence of the Polish state, a team of several dozen warriors, including their servants and craftsmen, was probably stationed in the city. The castle called "Wilcza Szczęka" served as an observational and defensive role on the side of Silesia and the Czech Republic and was most probably captured and burned during the Polish-Czech war as a result of the invasion of King Wenceslas on Polish soil. At that time, no attempt was made to rebuild it, and the role it played was built in later years and located nearby Ogrodzieniecki Castle in Podzamcze.
Currently, Birów Mountain has become a place of wooden and medieval reconstruction
castle. The buildings of Grodow are: a gate tower with a chest shaft, a communist cottage, watchtower and observation tower. Here you can see archaeological exhibits acquired during excavations and exhibitions depicting the lives of residents in the former settlement. Birów Castle is a meeting place for fascinates of history and fun. In the tourist season from May to October many events are organized here. Incoming guests can participate in min. in fanciful "Journeys with Gandalf" and "Summer school of magic", look at the work of artisans, see the Slavic warriors and the fighting Roman gladiators. Those seeking traces of the past should go to the nearby hill called Suchy Połciem, where they will be able to see the preserved fortifications from the World War II. From there, it is close to the largest ruins of the medieval stronghold - Ogrodzieniec Castle, in which the power of positive impressions awaits visitors.
