Museum. Wojciech Kętrzyński in Kętrzyn is one of the oldest museums in Warmia and Mazury.

It has been running continuously since February 26, 1946. During the 65 years of its history, the Museum has survived many reorganisations and administrative changes. In 1987, as one of the first in Poland, it became a local government museum.

The museum was founded on the initiative of Zofia Licharewa, who from January 1945, even before the official transfer of power to the Polish civilian administration, dealt with the protection of movable monuments gathered in neighboring churches, manors and palaces in Rastemborki. For many years, the building of the Museum became the building of a former detention center at Powstańców Warszawy 1 Street. For the first time, the Museum's collection was open to the public in 1948. In May 1967, the Museum was moved to the rooms located in the reconstructed Teutonic castle.

For many years the Museum, apart from performing statutory tasks such as collecting collections related to the history of the region, organizing exhibitions and regional education, implements research and educational programs financed also from funds awarded by the Ministry and government agencies and other funds, also from the European Union.

At the Museum Wojciech Kętrzyński visitors can see primarily collections related to the history of the city and the region. A large part of the Museum's collection are exhibits in the field of art, artistic craft, history, as well as archives secured in the first post-war larches by the founder of the Museum - Zofia Licharewa.

Among the artistic collections, the following epitaphs deserve particular attention: a collection of sculptures from the late 15th century, funerary flags (Fryderyk Groeben and one of the funerary flags of the child with the image of the late Botho Eulenburg at the age of three), and a collection of tin equipment from the eighteenth-twentieth century and a collection of protected monuments in the surrounding manors and palaces.

From the numismatic exhibits, a large historical value is represented by a fragment of one of the three treasures of coins hidden in 1626. near the city walls, a collection of old city and guild seals, a collection of coins and medals from the 17th and 19th centuries, and a collection of replacement coins and notes from the early 1920s

The collections of the ethnographic department include, among others: traditional equipment used until recently in the Masurian countryside and a collection of eighteenth-century stove tiles. Noteworthy is also the interesting geological collection collected by Z.Licharewa. The photos, postcards and documentation collected at the Museum are a valuable source for getting to know the history of the city and the region. The museum library has, in addition to specialist literature, among others collection of old prints from the XV-XIX centuries, rich collections of publications devoted to the history of the region and unique copies of the local press from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection of 17th-20th century manuscripts is particularly valuable. from church archives and the magistrate's archives.
