Description
At the beginning of the 15th century, the Mazovian prince Janusz I Elder commissioned Nicolaus to build a stone castle on an artificially fortified island among swamps in the Liwiec River valley. The Livian stronghold guarded the then border of Poland and Lithuania of Liwiec until 1569. The stronghold was extended by Prince Bolesław IV (1437), Princess Anna Mazowiecka (1512) and Queen Bona Sforza (about 1550).
The last of the Mazovian Piast dynasty, Princess Anna, ruled the castle in 1526-37. The stronghold was conquered twice by the Swedes: in 1656 ("deluge") and 1703 (northern war). In 1782, the Liw starost Tadeusz Grabianka staged a baroque manor house next to the Gothic tower as the seat of the eldership, burnt in the middle of the 19th century.
During World War II, the Germans planned to dismantle the ruins on a brick for the construction of the Treblinka extermination camp.
This was prevented by a young Polish archaeologist Otto Warpechowski who deliberately misled the occupiers: he convinced the starost of the supposedly Teutonic origin of the castle (!) And in 1942-44 he led
renovation of the Polish, Piast stronghold. financed by the Third Reich (!).
Conservation works were completed already after the war, in 1961. Since 1963, there has been the Armory Museum in the Castle in Liw with a rich collection containing weapons and militaria from the XV-XX century. painting and graphics from the 17th-20 century (works by, among others, Leon Kaplinski, Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz, Wojciech and Jerzy Kossak) as well as antique furniture
and fabrics. At midnight, the walls of the castle are visited by specters and ghosts, including the famous Yellow Lady, the spirit of the castellan liwian Mrs. Ludwika, innocently truncated for her alleged betrayal of marriage.
The museum hosts knights' tournaments, scientific presentations, concerts of classical and popular music, and the gothic gate tower serves as a gallery of temporary exhibitions. We conduct interesting activities for children and teenagers as part of museum lessons.
