Underground Route of the Rzeszów Old Town is possible to visit throughout the year. Get to know the history of this unique place

The transformation of the underground of the Old Town of Rzeszów into a tourist pearl was considered since the 1980s. However, it was not until 1994 that the decision was made to connect the surrounding wine cellars and excavations under the Market Square (which have survived the time of "securing" concrete in previous years) on the underground route.

It was decided to create it under the eastern part of the Market Square, with entrance in the Rynek 12 building in the southern frontage and exit in the northern frontage, next to the Polonia House, right on the premises of Rynek 19.

At the beginning of 2000, mining works began, consisting in the excavation of an underground corridor connecting the cellars leading from the Rynek 14 basement to the Rzeszów Piwnica near Rynek 19. The newly created excavation was called the Lubomirski Corridor. This corridor was made by digging up a fragment of the previously existing undergrounds near the tenement house No. 15, which in the previous stages of work were liquidated by filling with chemical backfill. Mining and construction works were carried out by the Zelbud company in Rzeszów.

The corner building Rynek 12 was renovated for the entrance to the underground. The entrance was located from the side reaching the Market Street. Baldachówka. On the other hand, at the exit in the Rzeszów Cellars, a fragment of an old tenement from the 16th century was visible, from which the entrance and a window of sandstone remained. A part of the cellars under tenement houses No. 11, 12, 13 and 14 were included in the route, which constituted communal property and did not have users at that time.
