The Gdynia Aquarium functions as part of the Maritime Fisheries Institute - the National Research Institute.

It is the oldest unit exploring the sea in our country. The aquarium aims not only to present aquatic and water-land animals, but also to transfer knowledge and disseminate the latest information from the world of oceanographic sciences. The Gdynia Aquarium is one of the largest institutions of this type in Poland.

Since 2005, the Aquarium has the status of a zoological garden and presents four main biotopes: coral reef, oceanic waters, Amazonian jungle and the Baltic Sea. In 68 tanks, located on 3 floors of the building, there are 1500 animals from almost 250 species. Their aquariums have a capacity of 200 to 10,000 liters

In Gdynia Aquarium, there is also an Education Center, whose aim is to familiarize the largest possible number of young people with biology, ecology and protection of the marine environment. Participants of the classes organized here learn about the underwater world through the senses of sight, touch, hearing, and through practical exercises.

The Gdynia Aquarium is a rather unusual zoo, which focuses on the presentation of the marine environment. The whole exhibition of the zoo is enclosed in a block of one building, but despite its uniqueness, the aquarium fulfills the duties of a modern zoo, also through educational activities, promotion of nature conservation, conducting broadly understood ecological education and scientific research.
