Description

Nowomiejska fourteenth-century temple has the largest team in Poland murals.

They were created in the Middle Ages and in the years 1600-1650, it was later the founder of the Chelmno province governor Paul Dzialynski. Paintings cover the walls of the chancel as well as the nave. They represent a variety of images of the contents of moralizing and historical. In the second span of the north wall of the nave shows the siege by the Swedes in 1628. City - as it was believed, and as shown in the painting - they were not captured by the enemy thanks to the protection of the Virgin Mary. The third stage includes a span of Christ preacher in the temple and the figures of Moses and Aaron, and in the fourth shown Christ handing the keys of St. Peter wyobrażonemu as a shepherd of the sheep, with the accompanying sides two unrecognized characters,

The construction of the parish church of St. Thomas the Apostle began around 1300 with the construction of the city walls. At first it was added to a presbytery wooden church. Since the mid-fourteenth century gradually erected side walls of the nave and the lower part of the tower. Also extended the choir and closed them triangular span. When the aisles were already covered with cross vaults, they began to raise the walls of the nave and tower. Eventually, the church tower reached a height of 40 meters, and the height of the nave were PLN 17.7 m. Principal building was the Teutonic Order, which had the patronage and financed the construction. Around the year 1600 to the southern nave basilica was built baroque chapel of St. Chapel of the Cross called Dzialynski walled up a large arched window in the main tower, enlarged windows in the aisles and changed the system side entrances to the temple. The final shape of the church received in the eighteenth century. In 1971, Pope Paul VI elevated the church of St. Thomas the Apostle to the rank of Minor Basilica.
