Description
Near this place, first a wooden and then a stone chapel was built, where a figure was found, which was already worshiped. The current sanctuary was built in the Baroque style in 1709-1759 on the initiative of the Bishop of Warmia, Teodor Potocki (also equipped by his successors). In 1720, the temple was given the call to invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.
The whole assumption is similar to the one from Święta Lipka, which was a model for the newly built sanctuary in Krosno. The greatest treasure of the temple, the statue of the Mother of God worshiped here for 500 years, disappeared in 1945 and we still do not know what happened to it.
The regional, most-known artists in Warmia also worked on equipping the sanctuary, including Krzysztof Peucker and Chrystian Schmidt. The temple delights with expensive equipment: beautiful baroque altars, a musical gallery with organs, a pulpit, a bench complex. The church is surrounded by cloisters, and the gate is decorated with decorative wrought iron gates.
In Krosno, a film by the outstanding French director Anne Fontaine was filmed. "Innocent" from 2016 with Agata Kulesza, Agata Buzek and Joanna Kulig in the main roles. The film tells the story of Prussian nuns raped by soldiers of the Red Army in 1945.
