Description

The main purpose of the Museum's activity is to protect the heritage of technical culture in Silesia, as well as didactic and scientific activities.

The objectives are implemented primarily through the protection of the collection, the development of expert opinions and documentation, as well as the maintenance and revitalization of historical industrial facilities.

The Museum's mission is also carried out by the organization of cultural and educational events aimed at promoting the idea of protecting technical monuments. The Museum also undertakes prosocial activities in the Świdnicki poviat.

From 01/01/2017, the Railway Museum in Silesia is part of the Foundation for the Protection of Industrial Heritage of Silesia, an independent non-governmental organization that undertakes the practical protection of selected post-industrial objects characteristic of the economic development of Silesia

COLLECTIONS

The collection of exhibits taken over from PKP in 2004 consisted of 34 locomotives, 41 wagons and 8 workshop machines. All of these objects were technically inefficient and some in a state of total ruin. The state of the office, workshop and halls of the engine room required thorough renovations.

During the first stage of the Museum's operation, a number of cleaning and safety works were carried out. Most of the rooms and roofs of the buildings were renovated, the electrical installation was repaired and additional lighting was installed. Renovated rooms have been furnished with offices, a lecture hall and exhibition halls.

After more than 10 years of operation, the Railway Museum in Silesia provides exhibitions covering historic standard gauge rolling stock from the period from 1890 to the 1970s. The collection consists of over 40 steam locomotives (Polish, German, English and American production), electric and diesel locomotives and more than 50 wagons and other specialized railway vehicles, set on tracks with a total length of approx. 2 km.

The museum has the only functional gauge locomotive in Lower Silesia - the Polish steam locomotive TKt48-18 from 1951. In addition, the museum has collections of equipment, tools and railway documents as well as thematic iconographic collections related to the Silesia area. The exhibition also includes exhibitions of machines and industrial equipment. A significant part of the collection are iconographic, library, archival collections and those related to the railway and its surroundings in the field of communication and traffic security.

In spring 2014, the "Steam Train" was launched at the Museum of Industry and Railways in Silesia, which is a new, more attractive form of presenting the collections. Thanks to the renovation and modernization of the historic railway infrastructure, a railway route leading through the most important parts of the Museum was launched.
