Description

Port Krzyż in Gdynia

Inconspicuous souvenir of the construction of the port in Gdynia, its history goes back to 1921 when the first pale for the first pier was nailed, and the engineer of the port of Gdynia, Eng. Tadeusz Wenda initiated the construction of a wooden cross. When in 1922 the Seym passed the act on the construction of the port in Gdynia, the cross was already waiting for a whole host of builders of this unprecedented investment at that time. On April 29, 1923, the opening ceremony of the Temporary Military Port and Fishermen's Shelters was held, during which the Polish Primate Edmund Dalbor, in the presence of President Stanisław Wojciechowski and Prime Minister Władysław Sikorski, dedicated the port and port cross.

In 1932, due to the extension of the scope of construction works, the cross was in the middle of the investment, which is why it was moved to the then ul. Coastal (currently Washington) and placed on the beach near the Office of the Port Governor.

The year 1939 and Nazi aggression on Poland was the time of the destruction of our cross, it was cut by the Germans to pieces. But already in 1945 a new cross appeared, funded by Gdynia fishermen. He's standing here all the time. Only the sea definitely moved away from this place. In the picture you can see, and it is made towards the sea, as the old beach at ul. Coastal, what a huge amount of work and effort had to put in the building port and Gdynia throughout this period.

This place will always remind us of the great visionary, the builder of the port of Gdynia inż. Tadeusz Wenda and Gdynia fishermen
