Description

The Grudziądz Museum was established on June 15, 1884 as the Municipal Museum of Antiquities, in which mainly archaeological monuments were presented.

With time, the Museum was expanded with exhibits in the fields of history, ethnography, art, artistic handicrafts and numismatics.

The Museum did not have its headquarters for many years. In 1912, the collections were exposed in a specially built facility at 28 Legionów street.

In 1956, the Museum was moved to the baroque conventual building of the former Benedictine monastery, which was adapted for museum needs. The complex of the former Benedictine monastery belongs to the most valuable monuments of Baroque architecture in Pomerania. Currently, there are temporary exhibition rooms and the Gallery of Contemporary Pomeranian Painting.

Museum. Fr.. dr. Władysława Łęgi, who has been the patron of the institution since 2005, also takes up the former monastery port - the so-called Opatów Palace (where in November 2018 a permanent exhibition entitled "Cavalry Training Center in Grudziądz 1920-1939"), as well as the Castle Mountain with the Klimek Tower and five historic granaries will be opened.

The famous Grudziądz granaries - situated on a high embankment - create a unique defensive sequence, characteristic of the Vistula river panorama of the city. They all represent a uniform type of usable and defensive architecture. The oldest Grudziądz granary, adjacent to the Water Gate, houses the exhibition "History of Grudziądz." On four storeys of granary, the history of the city from the Middle Ages to 1939 is presented. The exhibition has a chronological order. Subsequent exhibitions are presented in the Spichrz halls No. 13-15. Here you can find archaeological exhibitions: "Medieval Knight's Castle in the Plemiets", "Medieval Jewelery from Grudza", "Grudziądz in the period of Roman influence" and "Northern part of the Chełmno land in prehistory and the Middle Ages". In the granary No. 17 there are educational rooms, temporary exhibition rooms and the exhibition "Bronisław Malinowski (1951-1981). Olympic champion. Athlete."

The Museum, thanks to the variety of proposals, enables the development of historical and artistic interests, brings closer the material and spiritual culture of past centuries, and also provides an opportunity to learn about current trends in art.
