Description

The museum is located in a historic old Polish court. The nobles living in it possessed the Old Village, located south of Limanowa.

The borders of this village and the city until the Second World War were determined by the manor house. The history of the Old Village and its families dates back to the fifteenth century. It is worth mentioning the families: Słupsk, Drużyna, Jordanów, Przyłęcki, Czerni - Szwarcenbergów. However, the history of the present mansion dates back to the XVII centuries. Its development took place during the period of its management by the Dydyński family (mid-eighteenth - the 1840s), and then Mars (1853-1945), after which the name of the manor remained to this day. The former complex belonged to, among others, the brewery (currently the poviat starosty building), the manor park (its remains are currently the City Park), the neogothic St. Valentine's chapel (mid-nineteenth century) and the breeding farm (now private property), where once breeded red Polish cattle and fields and forests (currently in the residence of Zygmunt August and the people of Mars).

The Mars family contributed to the development of modern breeding economy as well as the political and economic prosperity of the city in the second half of the 19th century. Especially in history, Antoni Józef Mars with his wife Franciszka from Żelechowscy and their son Zygmunt and Jadwiga from Zieliński were remembered. Thanks, among others her efforts were made in 1867. Limanowski poviat, Towarzystwo Zaliczkowe (today's Cooperative Bank), a casino. They were interested in French investors to establish an oil refinery in Sowlin. The brewery produced in the Galician period known for good quality "mars" beer. At that time, such brands as Koźlak and March were produced. In the interwar period, the manor was a center of public and political life.

In 1934, the Mars family sold a brewery to the Archbishop's Brewery in Żywiec. During the German occupation, along with the last owner, the family-owned mayor of Włodzimierz Paygert lived in the court. After the Second World War, the communist authorities took away the assets of the Mars family. In the years 1946-1951, the building housed the Lower Secondary School, and later the State Machine Center and the Military Staff. Since 1970, the building housed the Limanowa Museum and the PTTK office. Since 1987, the building is the exclusive seat of the Regional Museum of the Limanowa Region.

The brothers Walenty and Wincenty Gawron were the initiators of collecting regional collections for the future museum facility in the interwar period. After the Second World War, the beginnings of the museum collections were created by the Polish Society of Folklore Branch Limanowa, which collected historical and ethnographic collections in 1954-1971. The creation of the museum took place as a result of great efforts of local historians, ethnographers, famous artists and propagators of tourism in the Beskid Wyspowy and Gorce. Among these activists, it is worth mentioning Józef Staniszewski, Piotr Orzechowski, Andrzej Gibas, Adam Wojs, Antoni Górszczyk, Tadeusz Ociepka, Maksymilian Brożek, Kazimierz Sowa.
