Description

The Museum of Martyrdom in Słońsk is an institution whose aim is to collect collections of the concentration camp existing in German Sonnenburg.

And also a heavy prison. An important course of action is to conduct diverse educational forms and conduct workshops and meetings with the participation of young people from Poland and Germany, and if possible from other countries, in order to learn about history, culture and cooperation in a united Europe.

History of the Museum:

In 1973, a small group of residents of Słońsk set up to build a museum and monument. In February 1974. a Social Committee for the Construction of the Museum of Martyrdom in Słońsk was established under the chairmanship of the chairman of the local Commune National Council, Mr. Tadeusz Szymański, and Mr. Stefan Szperka, director of the State Agricultural Farm in Słońsk. Members of this committee include they were: Stanisław Michalak, Marian Talarkowski, Eugeniusz Zabielny, Teofil Kot, Bolesław Piotrowski, Tadeusz Demski, Henryk Gapiński and Piotr Senuka. All construction works were carried out by the prisoners of the local penal institution, and Mr. Jerzy Surmański was responsible for their work. Many employees of the plant helped him with this. The construction manager was Benedykt Masłowski, Mr. Antoni Polak was responsible for delivering building materials. We owe the professional care and design of the interior to Dr. Przemysław Mnichowski. The Museum's building was architecturally modeled on the Polish Virtuti Militari. The opening of the Museum of Martyrdom and the cutting of the ribbon on the monument dedicated to the martyred and murdered took place on September 28, 1974.

After more than thirty years of operation, the building needed a major renovation and refreshment of the exhibition. Thanks to Polish-German cooperation, the "Modernization of the building of the Martyrdom Museum in Słońsk along with the development of the museum area" and "Arrangement and equipment of the Museum of Martyrdom in Słońsk" were created for which funds from the European Territorial Cooperation program - Operational Program for Cross-Border Cooperation Poland were successfully obtained ( lubuskie voivodship) - Brandenburg 2007-2013. The partner of the Słońsk Commune was the Seelower Höhen Museum from Seelow. The substantive work related to the updating of the exhibition was entrusted to a group of experts from Poland and Germany. From 2015, visitors can see a renovated building and a new exhibition enriched with multimedia. Admission to the museum is free.
