The difference in channel levels over the length of 9.6 km changes by more than 100 m, which the ship overcomes on land with five water-driven ramps.

The area of ​​the Elbląg Canal - areas directly adjacent to it and the immediate vicinity of it constitute the protected landscape area. The unique natural and landscape values ​​are recognized and admired here every year by thousands of tourists - cruise passengers and individual water sports enthusiasts. Despite such a large crowd of nature lovers, human interference in the natural environment does not threaten the coexistence of hundreds of species of flora and fauna thanks to the existence of reserves, landscape parks and the aforementioned areas of protected landscape. Exploring the richness of nature existing here and experiencing aesthetic experience is possible especially during quiet cruises on the canal, walking and cycling rides to which are encouraged by the more and more numerous hiking trails in the area, including Elbląg, Rychliki, Pasłęk, Miłomłyn and Ostróda .

The Elbląg Canal with its unique incline system was included on the list of the Seven Wonders of Poland next to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Malbork Castle and the Wawel Cathedral in the online poll organized by Dziennik Rzeczypospolita in August 2007.

The Elbląg Canal is a technical monument, and in 2011 it was recognized as a historical monument.

In the years 2013-2014, the Canal, including slipways and locks, underwent a major renovation - among others the riverbed was drenched, the banks were strengthened, historic technical elements were restored.
